Author Interview: Darby Karchut

Hello readers! I bring you an interview with 2011 debut author, Darby Karchut. Her debut book, Griffin Rising will be available on June 28th.

Tell us about Griffin Rising in one sentence. Go!
Sixteen-year-old apprentice Griffin comes of age under the tutelage of his father-mentor and learns that life in urban America can be hell, even for an angel.

Tell us about Griffin, the character, what is he like?
Griffin is the classic flawed hero. Surviving a brutal past causes him to have moments of self-doubt. Except when a mortal is in peril, than his true nature as a guardian angel shines forth. And, although he is one of the good guys, Griffin can be as snarky as the next teenager, especially to his mentor and surrogate father, Basil.

You're website says you are already working on a sequel to Griffin Rising. Can you tell us how many books you have planned in the series?
Four books at this point. The sequel, Griffin’s Fire, is finished and I am in the midst of outlining Book Three.

How long does it take you to write a book?
Griffin Rising took about seven month. Griffin’s Fire about six months. But I love to edit and refine, so I keep working on my books up until the last minute. I live to tweak!

Can you create a three song playlist for Griffin Rising?
Let me grab my iPod. Oh, looky - there’s a playlist entitled “Griffin’s Playlist.”  LOL!!
My three songs would be: Everyday by Rascal Flats, Halo by Beyoncé, and All You Need Is Love by the Beatles. And Rhythim of Love by Plain White T’s.

I created a widget to listen to these songs.

What was your favorite(s) fantasy novel when growing up?
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Do you have a new favorite(s) now as an adult?
Same as above, but add The Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan and The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.

How will you celebrate Griffin Rising’s release day?
Scrambling like mad and recovering from jet lag. I’ll be returning from a bicycle tour of western Ireland just a few days before release. The trip was a surprise from my husband in celebration of my debut novel and our 25th wedding anniversary. Yup-he’s a keeper!

Tell us three facts about yourself that may surprise your readers.
One, I love to run uphill. No. Really. I live in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies and love powering up steep trails. I do some of my best thinking while anaerobic.
Two, I can read classical Latin fluently (speaking it is another issue...)
Three, I’ve memorized every poem in the entire The Lord of the Rings. Go ahead. Test me.

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.
I have a cat named Heisenberg, who is rather uncertain about things.

Anything else you'd like to share with my readers?
I just want to thank them for taking time to stop by. And a big thank you, Samita, for having me on your blog. Book bloggers simply rock my world! I hope everyone enjoys reading Griffin Rising as much as I had time writing it.

Thanks Darby for taking the time to share with my readers! And Happy Birthday too!!!
